It is a species which originates from North America, more precisely from the subtropical regions. Nowadays, it is more and more widespread in the world.
At maturity, the Red-eared slider has a green-brown color with purple reflexes which are a little bit deeper in males. It measures 20-25 cm in length and weighs 1.5-2 Kg. Young turtles show a more intense color. Their back is green marked with brown, green and yellow stripes spreading over the neck, head and limbs.
In their natural environment, they are mainly spread over the regions crossed by river courses with slow water flow, puddles and lakes which are rich in micro and macrophyte vegetation.
Being carnivore in the first stages of life, it feeds on aquatic and terrestrial fauna. Then, it gradually becomes omnivore till it reaches maturity.
In their natural environment, the mating takes place from March till June. The incubation period lasts 60 to 75 days, but it is affected by temperatures. The turtle lays between 4-20 eggs on June-July. When the eggs hatch, the young turtle measures 3-4 cm.
